NYMTC-Planning-Area-Map2

Since the 1970’s, Federal transportation legislation has mandated that all urbanized areas with a population over 50,000 must have a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) in order to qualify for Federal transportation funding. Created in 1982 as the MPO for New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) provides a collaborative planning forum to address transportation-related issues from a regional perspective; undertakes studies for transportation improvements; forecasts future conditions and needs; pools the resources and expertise of its member agencies to plan for transportation and development in the region; and makes decisions on the use of Federal transportation funds.

The NYMTC region includes New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley. The NYMTC planning area covers 2,440 square miles and a population of 12.4 million, which was approximately 64% of New York State’s population based on 2010 Census counts.

Together with an interested and active community, NYMTC works to keep the region moving in the right direction in order to improve air quality, increase mobility, reduce congestion and preserve our high quality of life. Finding better ways to interact and converse with the people in the NYMTC region results in gaining valuable knowledge about problems and needs in diverse communities. To that end, and within Federal requirements, NYMTC’s members revised its Public Involvement Plan as part of an ongoing effort to improve public outreach and involvement activities. The revised PIP includes revisions to NYMTC’s Operating Procedures for Public Participation. The revised Public Involvement Plan and Operating Procedures for Public Participation were adopted by the Council on September 27, 2012. Click here to download a copy of the plan.
